Visit to Güssing – June 2008 – by Sister Mary Traupman
Stadt Gűssing ist neu gemacht.
(The city of Gűssing is made new.)
In June, I had the opportunity, once again, to visit in
Burgenland. Gűssing has been the
beneficiary of funds from the European Union, and is using the money to make,
almost literally, a new city.
In the downtown
area, all the streets are being reconstructed, with flower beds and some small
street parking places. The courtyard in front of the church has been re-done,
and a stone bench added. The center of the town, in front of the Rathaus, has a
new wall. All of this, of course, is very beautifully done.
New industry is
flourishing. There is so much new industry that many new jobs are created. This
will enable the young people to find jobs right in Gűssing and they will no
longer be forced to go to Vienna and Graz. Several of my relatives have already
returned to South Burgenland.
I was delighted to
see a solar energy plant right on the outskirts of the city. In addition, many
houses have solar panels on the roofs. On entering the city, one can see a
large symbol of green, renewable energy in sight of the Burg. This is an
interesting combination of the old and the new.
I have a number of
pictures, which have been posted on our website. I’m sure you will enjoy seeing
them.
